Claire McCue, SILS Social Worker, and Alicia Simpson, SILS Family Law Attorney, at the request of the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, presented a training entitled, "Acknowledging the Power: INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION BETWEEN ATTORNEYS AND SOCIAL WORKERS/ADVOCATES" to over 35 crime victim advocates in Upstate New York. The training spotlighted the benefits of interdisciplinary practice in domestic violence cases, discussed the professional ethical concerns for lawyers and social workers practicing in an interdisciplinary setting, and described ways to establish a collaborative arrangement to represent clients more effectively. August 16, 2011: New York State Victim Assistance Academy
Claire McCue, and Alicia Simpson designed a full day intensive training program - Advocacy in Court - for the New York State Victim Assistance Academy. They trained service providers in law enforcement, social services, mental health & health care, criminal justice, and other professions who work with crime victims. Professionals from the crime victim services field demonstrated interdisciplinary practices to less experienced providers and helped them develop a toolkit for working with victims of domestic violence in NYS courts. The training addressed intimate partner violence in several populations, including those protected by the new Fair Access to Family Court law. Manar Waheed, SILS Family Law Attorney, presented an overview of the Fair Access to Family Court Law. Claire McCue and Alicia Simpson presented on the Interdisciplinary Collaboration between Social Workers and Attorneys. Thirty eight crime victim advocates from Kings, Queens, Manhattan, Richmond, Bronx, and Westchester counties attended this Intensive Institute, Advocacy in Courts. August 18, 2011: Young Adult Dating Violence
Claire McCue, SILS Social Worker, and Manar Waheed, SILS Family Law Attorney, conducted a training at Wagner College to educate 42 resident assistants (RAs) about teen and young adult dating violence. During the training, RAs were introduced to the dynamics of dating violence, the impact of dating violence on young adults, barriers to safety for victims of dating violence on campus, and effective intervention strategies.
August 31, 2011: Nurse - Family Partnership Training
Claire McCue, SILS Social Worker, and Manar Waheed, SILS Family Law Attorney, conducted a training at the Nurse - Family Partnership on Staten Island. They trained nurses on how to screen for domestic violence during health care home visits, provided techniques for interventions, and discussed the legal and social work remedies available to patients on Staten Island.
