Staten Island Legal Services (SILS) (across from the ferry) seeks to sponsor third-year law students, judicial law clerks, and recent law graduates for Skadden public interest law fellowships starting in Fall 2013.

Examples of possible projects through SILS include:
Economic Empowerment Program for Domestic Violence Survivors—working with /Domestic Violence unit to secure income sources and address consumer debt for low-income and immigrant survivors who must attain financial self-sufficiency in order to escape domestic abuse.
Working with our foreclosure prevention unit to develop a consumer law practice, with a focus on debt collection defense and fighting predatory credit card issuers;
Working with a large and diverse immigrant community to analyze government compliance with language access laws and enforce the rights of Staten Islanders with limited English proficiency; and
Developing a “home repurchase” loan program to allow foreclosed homeowners to purchase their own homes at foreclosure auctions.
Developing an education advocacy project to help special needs children get required educational services from the Department of Education and to challenge improper school suspensions.
The above are only examples – we will consider any project that fulfills our goals and complies with the requirements of the applicable fellowship. We will work actively with the selected candidate on his/her fellowship proposal.
