Law Student Internships
Staten Island Legal Services accepts law student applications for internships throughout the year. Interns can work part-time during the school year and full time during the summer. We offer law students opportunities to work closely with lawyers on a wide variety of cases, interact with clients, and attend court proceedings. Students can also represent clients at administrative hearings. Lawyers provide close supervision.
Students generally work in a few different areas of law to gain exposure to more than one type of legal practice. We handle cases involving domestic violence, immigration, foreclosure prevention, and government benefits, including unemployment and disability benefits.
Interested individuals should send a resume and a cover letter indicating their area(s) of interest to Nancy Goldhill firstname.lastname@example.org.
I just wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity over the last couple of months to work with the attorneys at SILS. In the brief time I was here I learned a lot about New York practice and procedure. I also appreciated the opportunity to draft a violation petition, to observe you in
court, and to participate in intake. I found the staff here to be caring, selfless, and truly invested in the needs of the clients you are serving.
I enjoyed my time at Staten Island Legal Services, and perhaps I will have the opportunity to do so again in the future.

My summer at Staten Island Legal Services let me gain experience in family law, unemployment, immigration law and foreclosure defense—a range of practice areas not many internships provide. At the same time, the internship exposed me to every aspect of direct client services from the police station to the courtroom. I got to see firsthand how attorneys can work with social workers to really meet the needs of their clients in a manner that improves their lives rather then simply addressing their immediate legal needs. And the SILS staff was incredible, dedicated and willing to teach at every turn, while allowing me to work independently whenever appropriate. Working at SILS challenged me and inspired me. I’d recommend it to any law student.

The SILS summer internship presents a special opportunity to enagage the law through direct client service, and to learn under talented and supportive supervising attorneys. As an intern in the Homeowner Defense Unit, I helped to assist clients in different stages of litigation, and was afforded a broad range of experiences among other things, I drafted a motion, pleadings, and research memoranda, and attended settlement negotiations. The internship program also provided exposure to SILS' various practice areas and the work of legal services citywide. Perhaps most remarkable is how friendly and supportive the entire SILS staff is. I had a great summer learning from and working with the wonderful folks at SILS.
